Loblaw has announced that 10 new eCascadia electric trucks are headed to Vancouver.

“This achievement aligns perfectly with our commitment to environmental sustainability and represents a substantial step forward in our ongoing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint,” Wayne Scott, senior director of transport maintenance, said in a LinkedIn post.

The news came after the company rolled out its first heavy-duty, fully electric transport truck last April. The vehicle, manufactured by Daimler Truck North America (DTNA), made trips from Loblaws stores in Boucherville, Que. and the Greater Montreal Area, including Provigo, Provigo Le Marche, and Maxi. The trucks get up to 370 kilometres per charge while hauling up to 82,000 pounds of gradually diminishing gross weight, according to a statement.

It also comes as Loblaw is developing an EV charging network, Park + Charge, for EV customers. Launched in September 2022, the network will be available at stores nationwide.

“The addition of these electric trucks is a testament to our dedication to clean energy and responsible corporate citizenship. We firmly believe that this investment will benefit our company and contribute positively to the environment and the communities we serve,” Scott said. “We anticipate that these vehicles will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also prove to be more economical in the long run, showcasing our company’s dedication to sustainable practices.”
